Willful Neglect, 2022 - 2023
Glass and photography’s immediacy are often at odds with the time it takes for material and contextual preparation. Russell, and others, push the limits of human navigation when visiting the poles to capture a landscape in peril. The effort involved in manipulating the material of glass is also one that is not entered into lightly. The raw materials are sourced and coaxed through heat into a state that can be easily manipulated, an extreme inverse to the cold needed to transform water into a solid matter. Hours of time are spent in the kiln to ensure that these homogenized materials will hold together. Similar to ice in our contemporary setting, these materials record moments in time that decay, erode, or break after their inception.
